Sam's Club is a warehouse retail outlet where much of what you purchase is in bulk. This helps substantially cut down on the price of what you're buying. So whether you're purchasing corn chips or toilet paper, you'll cut down on what you pay. However, it is a membership-based store, which means you need to sign up and create an account. This can be done through the Sam's Club login page, or directly at one of the outlets near your home.
Sam's Club Company Profile
Before you create an account and use the Sam's Club login, you should dig a bit deeper into what the company is and the kinds of services it offers. You should also stop and consider whether this particular warehouse store is right for you, or if the competition, such as Costco, is a better fit. You may need to see which has an available store in your area. This might have more of an impact on what you sign up for over anything else.
Sam's Club has been open since 1983, when the very first store opened up in Midwest City, Oklahoma. The company expedited the process of expanding when it bought out SuperSaver Wholesale Warehouse Club, which at the time was a 24-location warehouse store throughout Louisiana. The company continued this approach in New Jersey by buying out Two Guys and Jefferson Ward Store.
Walmart, the owner of Sam's Club, found it easier to buy out open small chains instead of attempting to build brand new facilities. It also focused on regions where these small chains operated a dozen or more stores so that distribution would be easier (instead of sending goods to one location that had no other nearby stores to share in the distribution costs).
For most of the company's existence, it focused on working with small businesses in the given regions. It wanted to give these small companies the ability to save on goods. However, as time went on, more and more consumers turned to Sam's Club to cut down on expenses by buying in bulk. Because of this, Sam's Club changed its slogan and some of its sales tactics during the mid-2000s to go after the individual consumer.
Benefits of Being a Sam's Club Member
During the early years and even into the early 2000s, Sam's Club was strict on the forms of payments it would accept. It would accept payments through Discover Card, debit cards, and Walmart or Sam's Club-issued payment methods, but many of the most common forms of credit cards were not accepted. However, more recently this has changed, as more consumers are shopping at these stores. So now, you can make purchases at Sam's Club using any major credit card, ranging from Visa and MasterCard to American Express.
Sam's Club is different from other kinds of stores out there in that you need a membership to shop at the store. In addition to the fact that everything is sold in bulk, the company is able to keep prices lower than other stores by charging customers an annual membership fee. When looking at a possible Sam's Club membership, there are two options to consider, so you'll need to decide which of the two is right for you.
The regular membership gives you access to "instant savings offers," which you'll receive in the form of emails or direct mailers. These inform you about additional discounts to use at Sam's Club when shopping. You'll also be able to apply for a Sam's Club MasterCard. This kind of card makes you eligible to earn five percent back on gas, three percent on dining and travel, and one percent on all other purchases, although it caps the cash back at $5,000 annually.
With the standard membership, you do have access to the gas station, which will almost always offer discounted gas when compared to other gas stations in the area. If you live near such a location, this alone may make signing up for the basic membership worth it. With the regular membership, you have access to the tire and battery center as well. This center will repair flat tires, do battery testings, and install new wiper blades - all for free. You can split your membership with up to eight people, with each individual membership costing $40. The regular membership costs $45.
Sam's Plus Membership
Should you decide to go with the Sam's Plus Membership, you will receive some additional services over the basic membership. This includes receiving $10 back for every $500 you spend, with an annual cap at $500 a year (the membership costs $100, so if you believe you'll spend at least $3,000 at Sam's Club it's worth picking up this membership tier).
You have free shipping on all purchases with no minimum purchase, plus you can take advantage of the early shopping hours, which allows you to bypass the crowds. The early shopping hours start at 7 am Monday through Friday.
You receive free prescriptions on some select medications. Plus, you have access to more than 600 medication prescriptions for $10 or less. If you need to purchase glasses, you'll receive a 20 percent discount on all eyeglasses. All of this, plus the benefits of the regular membership, are given to you with the Sam's Plus Membership.
